When Jerry Seinfeld’s wife threw a shopping extravaganza/fundraiser with Derek Lam the celebrities turned up to spend some serious coin while doing good at the same time. Fortunately, you too can shop like the stars and help fund nonprofits right here in the Bay Area.

Introducing the aptly name PHILANTHROPIST Boutique. 1,600 square feet of ultra high-end women’s clothing that features “a mix of both well-established designers (think Rachel Roy, Vera Wang and more) and emerging talent.” 100 percent, yes, all of the boutique’s proceeds benefit Bay Area charities.

Jessica Moment, PHILANTHROPIST owner and UC Berkley School of Law graduate, credits her love for fashion and nonprofits for the idea. “One day when I was at the grocery store, I was looking at the Paul Newman dressings and I thought about how great it would be to do that with fashion.” (For those who our Newman neophytes; Paul Newman salad dressing dedicates a portion of their proceeds to charity.) Thus the idea was born.

shop0924Moment took her business plan and hit the streets, receiving accolades and encouragement abound. She phoned her friend Sally Fowler, who had over eight years of corporate retail industry experience and is now President of PHILANTHROPIST, and went to work.

PHILANTHROPIST features one charity per quarter, which in-turn will be the beneficiary of that quarter’s profits. However the charitable work doesn’t stop there. At the beginning of each quarter, PHILANTHROPIST holds an event at the store to introduce the new charity and launch that season’s line. The sales from the opening night will also be matched with a personal donation from Moment herself.

Today PHILANTHROPIST boasts a uniquely chic and glamorous interior where women can enjoy a sip from the champagne bar, a cupcake from Sweet Things, a local bakery, or personal shopping services. The dressing rooms are luxurious and adventuresome as each has a characteristically different vibe and the fashion is hip, fresh and gorgeous.

Moment believes that even if people are more conscious about how they spend their money these days, it doesn’t mean that they stop spending. Instead they make more conscious decisions, making PHILANTHROPIST the perfect choice.
