We all usually take our medications with a sip of water or two. Ever think about how this may be harmful for us? According to an Associated Press investigation, antibiotics, mood stabilizers and common over-the-counter medications have been found in the drinking water of 41 million Americans.
That’s a startling fact – you might ask, Why?
This is because when we consume medication, a majority of it is metabolized in our system; however, the unused medication passes through our body and is flushed down the toilet. Even though waste water is treated, pharmaceutical residue cannot be eliminated. With the drug levels increasing, scientists are uncertain what the long-term consequence might be.
How can you make a difference?
Try to substitute natural medications and “greener” alternatives for the medications when you can. Natural alternatives are healthier, better for the environment and can work better for you.
