Pure and Simple

By Vivanista - September 20, 2009

395226087_9002872142We all usually take our medications with a sip of water or two. Ever think about how this may be harmful for us? According to an Associated Press investigation, antibiotics, mood stabilizers and common over-the-counter medications have been found in the drinking water of 41 million Americans.

That’s a startling fact – you might ask, Why?

This is because when we consume medication, a majority of it is metabolized in our system; however, the unused medication passes through our body and is flushed down the toilet. Even though waste water is treated, pharmaceutical residue cannot be eliminated. With the drug levels increasing, scientists are uncertain what the long-term consequence might be.

How can you make a difference?

Try to substitute natural medications and “greener” alternatives for the medications when you can. Natural alternatives are healthier, better for the environment and can work better for you.

Cure your cold the Green way

When you feel a little scratch in your throat, instead of grabbing some cough syrup, gargle a little warm salt water, this helps dry up and clear infections. There are some other immunity supplements such as green tea and vitamin C which can be used to boost your immune system. Clear your congestion by using a netti pot to irrigate your nose with warm salt water. Doing this can reduce amount of dust that causes irritation. Try mixing essential oils and vitamin E lotions to calm allergenic symptoms such as rashes. Eucalyptus oil can open up your sinus and peppermint oil help alleviate a headache when applied to the temples. There are many ways to treat allergies, colds, irritations without the help of modern medicine, be creative.
