Tricks of the Trade

Ever wonder how celebrities always look red carpet perfect? How is it that they never have a mishap (Miss Jackson aside)? As a stylist, I am constantly challenged to find quick fixes for a myriad of fashion and beauty mishaps. Over the past ten years I have definitely been put to the test. Many of my girlfriends have heard, and put to good use, these tricks that I am now sharing with you. Lucky for you, over the past couple years, companies such as Gal Pal, Miss Oops, and my favorite Hollywood Fashion Tape have popped up and now provide Bond-like tools for almost any and every fashion emergency.
Nothing is more embarrassing than a sweat ring on your beautiful Gucci silk blouse, my saving grace for this is a simple product called Behind the Seams by Hollywood Fashion Tape. These simple shields are soft against the skin, won’t damage your garment and will keep you, at least appearing, dry! I have used these myself, on actresses, during photo shoots, on just about everyone I work with- they are brilliant!

Ever wonder how J. Lo wore that down to there green dress to the Grammys without showing all her goods? Toupee tape was her saving grace. This has been a long standing trick in the fashion world, and is now readily available to the fashion masses. You can also find it in a variety of shapes depending on your need. They will keep a strap from falling, quick fix a hem, keep the girls covered in a blouse that may gap open at the wrong time, just about anything!

Now I know the deodorant bottle says it is clear and quick drying, but it never fails that I get it on everything! The Deodorant sponge is about the most simple of inventions, but it is genius! You can quickly brush off the white mess with no residue or harm to the fabric.
That one extra glass of champers or staying up a few extra hours to surf your favorite blog can cause you to resemble a puffer fish by morning. Preparation H to the rescue. Though using it on your face (eyes primarily) it is not it’s intended purpose, remember Botox isn’t usually used for it’s intended purpose either, a small pea size amount can transform your face before you finish your first cup of coffee.
Trying to achieve a smokey eye is difficult enough, but trying to get the excess shadow off your face after wards can make you more than fashionable late. This is an easy fix, put concealer on last so you can clean your under eye after your eye make-up application! This is a trick I have seen countless make-up artist use plus if you do have fallen specks you can gently wipe it away with a q-tip dipped in remover without wrecking the rest of your masterpiece!
A stuck zipper doesn’t always mean you have might have gained a few pounds, sometimes they just stick. Wax is widely known to unstick items, but who carries a bar of wax in their handbag? No problem. Chapstick (clear is best) works just as well! Rub a small amount above and below the stuck zipper then work it up or down, always use it on the inside of the garment as not to stain the fabric.
