A beautifully tailored suit with a crisp dress shirt and a great tie is the successful man’s uniform, but don’t let your man forget the details! My mother used to say, “the devil is in the details,” and I have found that’s only true when you overlook them. Men are used to the basics; shoes, shirt, pants, jacket. Adding the details such as a great pocket square or nice cuff links are like icing on a cupcake- fun and absolutely necessary!

Cuff links are no longer reserved for men over 65 or on their wedding day. They’re the ideal way to show a little polish and personality. Another great way to make a distinguishing mark and add a sliver of color is with a pocket square. If your man is wearing a sport coat, tux, or full suit, the pocket square is important.

They range from cotton (perfect for summer) to silk, which provide a bit more polish. Look for squares that are reversible, providing two different patterns or colors, in turn expanding their use. Hermes, Brioni, Etro and Ferragamo are favorites of mine.

Belts were invented out of necessity; now they are necessary for a polished look. Belt Basic Rule #1: It must match his shoes. At the point of purchase this might not seem as important as the shoe, but trust me, it is! It’s simple enough to have the belt match the color and style of the shoes. If your guy is wearing a beveled black shoe, then he should have a beveled black belt. If your guy is sporting his crocodile loafers, make sure he sprang for the crocodile belt. And don’t forget to check if the hardware matches! Silver buckles or hardware on a shoe will always equal a silver buckle on his belt. My number one belt for men is the Hermes “H” belt. A variety of buckles each come with one leather strap that is reversible in your chosen colors.

All of these details will make your man look pull together and complete, while giving his wardrobe an extra little kick in the style pants!
