Star Power in Fundraising

It’s amazing what a celebrity can do for charities — Charlize Theron kissed a female guest to seal the deal on a $140,000 live auction donation, and, not to be outdone, Jeremy Piven jumped onstage to encourage two guests to donate $140,000 for walk-on rolls on his HBO hit show “Entourage.” These two examples of star power happened at an event in San Francisco on October 22, 2009. The charity is called ONEXONE, and it is an organization dedicated to preserving the lives of children in the United States and globally, championed by Academy Award-winner Matt Damon.
Guests included Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron, Jeremy Piven, Josh Groban, David Arquette, Mia Hamm, Laila Ali, Nomar Garciaparra and Mayor and Mrs. Gavin Newsom, just to name a few. Vicki Escara, CEO of Feeding America, educated the crowd about kids in need and how they are mobilizing support. Not only did guests’ contributions go to vital causes, performances were donated from Snow Patrol, Carlos Santana, eight-year old pianist and composer Ethan Bortnick and Spencer Day.
