High Five: Vivanista’s Five Favorite Chardonnays
By Layne Gray - November 5, 2009Vivanista flies viewers to four continents to visit a total of five different wineries that produce unique styles of chardonnay.
Did you know …
- White Burgundy is made from chardonnay grapes whereas a red Burgundy is made from the pinot noir grape.
- Most chardonnay grapes grown in the Napa Valley are planted in the Carneros region to the west of the town of Napa where the temperatures are much cooler than further north in the valley.
- The Columbia Crest winery in Washington state is surrounded by vineyards. Additionally, other crops grown in the area are planted in a circular fashion which is more efficient from an irrigation standpoint.
- Argentina is the fifth largest producer of wine in the world.
- Catena Winery in the Mendoza region of Argentina grows chardonnay grapes in vineyards as high as 5,100 feet in elevation in the foothills of the Andes mountains.
- The Margaret River region in western Australia has a unique maritime climate and is surrounded by the sea on three sides.
- The Cote d’Or is a 30 mile-long escarpment that produces the finest French Burgundies.
- Whereas most French Burgundies have alcohol levels in the 12 – 13% range, California chardonnays can get into the 14 – 15% range.

great choices! If you are a fan of sauvignon blanc, I highly reccomend Kim Crawford of New Zealand. Wine Spectator gives it a rating in the high 90s and you can get it at Costco for about $12 a bottle. Yum!
