Sex and the Volunteer: Emily Morse of “Sex With Emily”
By Vivanista - January 8, 2010
When it comes to volunteering, it becomes so easy to focus the majority of your time and energy on others that you forget to tend to your own needs and personal relationships. Philanthropy, after all, is all about relationships: communicating and giving back.
We recently discovered a list of the 10 hobbies that instantly make you sexier, one of which happens to be volunteering. And just like the rest of the world, those who volunteer especially need to be in a healthy and happy place emotionally and sexually to ensure they positively influence those around them. Which is exactly why we turned to an expert who empow(H)ers others to begin this dialogue.
Meet Emily Morse of the hit radio show and blog Sex With Emily in our exclusive interview where we talk taboo and open Pandora’s box on life, love, sex, and “everything in between”.
V: Tell us about Sex With Emily…
It’s a talk show about sex, relationships and everything in between. I’ve been live on CBS radio and am now transitioning to Sirius/XM Satellite Radio. I’ve got over 100 shows that can be downloaded for free from iTunes.
V: Hmmm, so exactly what is in between sex and relationships?
Dating, breakups, marriage, divorce, cheating, grooming, experimenting, fantasy, role-play and love.
V: What is the most popular question you receive from listeners
From Men-
SEX: How can I get my partner to orgasm, how do I know if my partner orgasmed?
RELATIONSHIP: I’m bored in my relationship. How can I spice it up?
From Women-
SEX: How can I orgasm during intercourse (only 30% of woman actually do, by the way)?
RELATIONSHIP: How can I get him to commit?
V: You have completed a Sex With Emily reality television show. If it gets picked up, what will some of the different contests be and how will it be determined who gets kicked off?
The reality show, “Chasing Emily” is based on my life and work in San Francisco and how they combine. View the pilot.
V: With sex being such an important component of a successful relationship, why is it so taboo to talk about?
Because from a young age we’re told that sex is taboo, sometimes it has to do with people’s religious influences, or it’s just societal. I make it my life’s work to educate and inform people about sex and relationships in an informative and entertaining way.
V: What is one thing a woman can do to spice up her relationship?
Take the initiative and plan a special date night. Why not recreate your first date. Dress up, wear something that makes you feel special, end the night taking the initiative in the bedroom as well. A recent study showed that men’s #1 wish was that women took more control in the bedroom.
V: They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Do you agree?
I hope not, because I don’t cook! Although I know many who do, and it seems to work. Other ways to get to you man: be honest, open, communicative, interesting (have a life outside your dating life) and always keep some things a mystery.
V: Mystery? Like what?
Studies have shown that the one of the things that kills romance is our inclination to merge and become one. The problem is, merging into one person is not conducive to keeping the flame alive. There’s a certain amount of the unknown, independence, mystery and challenge that ignites the flame and fuels passion. Sometimes the comfort of a relationship will numb the romance.
V: What secret have men have confided in you that would shock most women?
Let’s just say the adage about things staying in Vegas, is quite apt.
V: So what do they do in Vegas that needs to stay there beyond strip clubs?
Did you see the movie The Hangover? I believe many a man shuddered watching his life pass before him, beyond call girls, strippers, and random hook-ups in elevators it seems that anything goes and lots of men make sure they take advantage of the boundless opportunities.
V: What is the number one thing that will kill a romance?
Insecurity about the relationship.
V: Boxers or briefs?
Boxers.
V: Sexiest celebrity?
Jon Stewart – funny is sexy.
V: What faded tradition do you wish would be resurrected?
Men opening doors for women, even in cars! Something really romantic about it and now with automatic locks this doesn’t happen with as much frequency. C’mon guys, take a stroll around to the passenger side!
V: If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be?
Ameila Earhart I used to write all my book reports about her in grade school. She’s inspirational and has one of my favorite quotes, “The woman who can create her own job is the woman who will win fame and fortune.”
V: The one word that best describes you?
Interested.
V: Interested in what?
Mostly in the dynamic of relationships, why they work, why they don’t, and what to do about it.
V: Who would you want to play you in a movie?
Well, I get a lot of “you look like Courtney Cox” so I guess she’s my first choice.
V: What is your greatest extravagance?
Sleeping in just a little bit longer whenever I possibly can.
About Emily
Emily Morse moved to San Francisco after graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Psychology to work in electoral politics. She parlayed from politics into film with an award-winning documentary she directed and produced about the 1999 San Francisco Mayoral election called See How They Run (hey, feel free to rent it on netflix).
The show, quite simply, is a bi-product of the reality that people want to tell Emily their life story. And, if they don’t, she finds out anyway. Her mission in life is to ask the questions you wanted to but weren’t ready to ask. Emily realized a few years ago that no matter where her conversation starts it ends with relationships and sex. Is he the one? Is she the one? Is there the one? Did Ipick the wrong one? And so Sex With Emily was born.
Sex With Emily launched in August 2005 as a podcast and quickly garnered a spot on iTunes’ “Top 20 Podcasts”, and has remained there since. Following the underground success of the show, Emily began hosting the show over traditional radio airwaves on 106.9 Free FM in San Francisco. She is syndicating the radio show and there’s a television show in development based on the weekly production of Sex With Emily.
