Vivanista recently sat down with event-coordinator, Tiffany Olson to learn more about Midnight Madeness and the cause it supports, Hostelling International.

What constitutes success for you with regards to Midnight Madness?

The most important factor for me is the safety of my riders. If there are no major injuries, then I am happy. Hitting our goal for number of participants comes in second on the success meter!

How do you balance the quantifiable goal of raising money with the goal of broadening of goodwill?

The money we raise for this event goes directly back into my organization… so there’s really no balancing that I have to do.

What are the greatest challenges you’ve had to face?

There are so many! It would be hard to list them all. I was given the opportunity to organize this event four years ago with zero experience coordinating events. I can only say that the progression for me has been incredible. I’ve learned many things the so-called “hard way”… but really, is there any other way?

What can other Chairs learn from your experience?

That your own gut and observations will serve you well. I advise all new Event Coordinators to trust their instincts, and talk to people! I’ve learned so much from my participants in post-event surveys and focus groups.

What are you wearing to the event?

Something comfortable! I usually wear tennis shoes, jeans and a tank-top. I’m out there on the front lines running around…doing everything from set-up, to vendor relations, to picking up trash, to driving the gear truck.

What qualities make an event Chair successful?

Attention to detail is one of the most important qualities, I believe. One also must be outgoing, flexible and steadfast.

What external resources do you use in your fundraising  efforts i.e. websites, classes/seminars, etc.?

Website, FaceBook, partnering with other cycling organizations, bike shops…

What is one fundraising tip you’ve learned that you’re willing to share?

You can’t please everyone.
