Notes & Words…A Benefit for the Children
Event Recaps 0 CommentsChildren have an uncanny ability to bring joy and light to everyday life. There is no greater turmoil than seeing a child suffer from illness. In protest of this hard truth, 1300 people took a stand to ensure that children will continue to share their light with the world. On April 1, 2011, the 2nd annual Notes & Words benefit concert was held at the historic Fox Theater. The event, which featured a line up of cutting-edge music by local bands, coupled with readings by bestselling authors, raised a half million dollars for Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland.
The magical evening began with ticket holders walking down a red carpet into the theatre serenaded by the voices of the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir. California Governor Jerry Brown and Clorox CEO Don Knauss were among the many luminaries in attendance. Once inside the theater, VIP’s were treated to a fancy cocktail reception in the Den with food provided by La Bonne Cuisine and a tequila bar hosted by Tres Agaves.
This year’s line up of talent included readings by NY Times bestselling authors Kelly Corrigan (The Middle Place,Lift), Michael Lewis (The Blind Side,Moneyball), and Beth Lisick (Helping Me Help Myself,Everybody into the Pool). Musical performances included HYIM, Megan Slankard and The Family Crest – all performers appearing on KFOG’s latest Local Scene CD.
Notes & Words — Children’s Hospital Oakland’s signature fundraising event — raises funds for several key programs, including, appropriately enough, music therapy. It also benefits Children’s Child Life Department — which runs the in-hospital school and playrooms — and the uncompensated care fund for patients.
