On January 24, 2011, 50 middle and high school age girls were able to take one step closer to making their dreams reality thanks to a series of inspirational classes and lectures presented by Defining Girl Academy and fashion designer, Jazmin Whitley.

Defining Girls Setting Goals

The event began with radio personality and Oprah Winfrey Network comedian, Faith Alpher opening the show.

The event was hosted by Defining Girl. Defining Girl is the non-profit creation of Twisted Silver designer, Deb Mitchell, who feels drawn to helping young girls navigate through a confusing world. Deb took this opportunity to communicate the importance of kindness and encouraged the young girls present to make a conscious decision not to follow the crowd.

Jazmin & Audience

After Deb spoke to the crowd, she introduced Jazmin Whitley. At the young age of of 22, not only has Jazmin earned the title of youngest designer to participate in NY Fashion Week, she regularly styles some of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities and starred in MTV’s House of Jazmin. At the event, Jazmin inspired the crowd by discussing her early passion for designing, as well as sharing some critical fashion tips. By sharing her own stories, Jazmin was able to help the girls realize that their aspirations can be achieved.

Jazmin, Girls, & Sprinkles

Following the workshop, each girl had the chance for a photo opportunity with Jazmin, received delectable Sprinkles cupcakes, and left the event with a bag of swag. As they said their goodbyes, the girls were invited to a sample sale of Jazmin’s designs at the nearby OrgHipChick boutique.

Did you know that 99.9% of supermarket turkeys sold in U.S. stores are one breed—the Broad Breasted White? Just as with today’s corn, factory farms have honed in on one strain of an inexpensive-but-fast-producing commodity. Fortunately for those in the know, organic and sustainable Heritage Breed turkeys are a richer, tastier option. Buy your Heritage turkey now while still available for the holiday (or year round!).

Many women consider some sort of cosmetic treatment or plastic surgery in anticipation of an upcoming event. But how far in advance should you get the treatment so you look your best? We went to Dr. James Anthony to find out.

Dr. James Anthony

We’re entering a really busy, exciting time of year when galas and Holiday parties are in full swing and we all want to look our best. Since a big event may be the impetus for some women to try plastic surgery or a cosmetic treatment for the first time, we wanted to find out how to properly plan for the busy social season. So we asked Dr. James Anthony, noted plastic surgeon, a couple of questions.

What should you look for when considering doctors?

Dr. Anthony: First and foremost, deciding to have plastic surgery or a cosmetic treatment is a big step and, indeed, you should take time and care in finding the right doctor. At a minimum, a plastic surgeon should be Board Certified and a member of ASAPS (American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) – a membership demonstrating skill and interest in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. They should also have significant experience under their belts (ideally hundreds of cases) with the procedure you are contemplating. Finally, they should have a variety of before and after photos to view so you can see their work firsthand and, most importantly, they should be someone with whom you feel very confident in entrusting your care.

How far in advance should someone plan to have a treatment?

Dr. Anthony: I’ve provided a complete cosmetic treatment and surgery planner at the end of this post as a reference. For common procedures like Botox, the ideal time for treatment is at least one week before an event to see the best results. For those considering lip enhancement, you should allow for one to two weeks to see the best result. Also, for women considering minor liposuction or breast augmentation the downtime is only two weeks – probably not as long as most people think!

Dr. Anthony’s Recommended Planning Guide

The timing below indicates how much time one should allow for treatments and surgeries before attending a big event, gala, Holiday party or wedding. Please note however, that is a guide only to help making these important decisions and you should always consult with your doctor before making plans.

Botox: One Week.

Fillers (includes Juvéderm, Radiesse® and others for smile lines and wrinkles): One week.

Lips: One – two weeks (to allow any extra little puffiness to settle).

Latisse® (this is a relatively new product that makes eyelashes longer, fuller and darker): One month to start seeing effects and up to three to six months for fullest effects.

Breast Augmentation: Two weeks.

Breast Reduction: Four weeks.

Breast Lift: Two weeks.

A flat abdomen after a tummy tuck

Liposuction (female and male): Two weeks to see initial results but final result (and ultimate waist / dress size!) can take up to six to eight weeks.

Tummy Tuck: One month to see initial good results, though results continue to improve for a few months post-op.

Nose: Two weeks to see initial results, though results continue to improve for six months or more.

Facelift: Three to four weeks, depending on your face as a thinner face heals faster and a fuller face may take up to one month. Results continue to improve subtly for up to three months post-op.

Eyes: Two to three weeks, though you can use eye makeup after one week.

###

About Dr. Anthony: Dr. James Anthony is a board certified San Francisco-based plastic surgeon.
Event Name: 2nd Annual NEDA Walk

Date of Event: October 3, 2010

Charity/Nonprofit beneficiary: National Eating Disorders Association [NEDA]

Vivanista recently spoke with WABC-TV News Anchor, dedicated mother, and event chair- Diana Williams, to learn about her upcoming event, the 2nd Annual NEDA walk, and the cause it supports, The National Eating Disorders Association.

Describe your upcoming NEDA Walk in a few sentences… What makes the event unique?

On October 3rd, I am chairing a walk to support the National Eating Disorders Association. We hope to have hundreds of people show up at Riverside Park for the event. Our slogan is “It’s Time to Talk About It!” because so often we fail to talk about anorexia or bulimia as serious illnesses.

What was the inspiration behind the NEDA walk? Why did you choose NEDA as the benefactor?

I have been a tremendous supporter of NEDA for a long time and currently serve on the NEDA board. Eating disorders are biological illnesses, they run in families and they run in mine. Both my brother and my family have been impacted by this terrible illness.

For a long time we weren’t sure how people would respond to a Walk for eating disorders. A run or race would be inappropriate since eating disorders can involve over-exercising. That’s why our walk is short—it’s more about getting people together to offer support and to educate people about eating disorders. We want people to know that anorexia and bulimia are nothing to joke about. These are illnesses that take a terrible toll on individuals and families

How many participants are you expecting? Will there be any surprise guests?

At this point we have several hundred people registered for the walk. More are signing up every day. We would love to see more than one thousand people with us in Riverside Park.

As for surprise guests: we have an inspiring mom, Judy Avrin who is completing a documentary about the loss of her daughter to bulimia. You may have read about Judy in the New York Times. Jenni Schaefer, who is an accomplished author and ED survivor will be there, And, Whitney Thompson, who is the first plus sized model to be voted America’s Next Top Model, will be there.

This is the 2nd year of the NEDA Walk. What do you think has made this event a success; and how have you changed this year’s event to keep it fresh?

This is a very unique event. It is a celebration of survival and joy, but also a chance for people to bond. It is an opportunity for parents to meet other parents. It is a chance for those struggling with an eating disorder to meet those who have overcome the illness. If anyone is struggling with a family member and doesn’t know where to turn, this is the event to check out. We are all there to support each other. This year we are adding an Expo, Yoga and a better sound system.

Is this an open event? If so, how much are tickets, and what percentage of proceeds will go to NEDA?

This is an open event, and everyone is welcome. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to NEDA and the programs NEDA funds in the fight against eating disorders. Event check-in and the NEDA expo will begin at 9am. The Walk will begin at 11am. Registration starts at just $20 for adults and $10 for children who are 12 years of age and under. NEDA is also offering $5 registration for dogs, so that your four legged friend can walk with you!

Who are your event sponsors? How will they add value to the event?

We are very selective in terms of the sponsors we reached out to. While we welcome all sponsors, we really wanted to bring in partners who support the cause. Walk sponsors this year include Brookfield Properties, Newmark Knight Frank, Whitestar Contracting & Consulting, All Points International Dist., Inc. (API), as well as NEDA’s media partner, WABC 7 and WPLJ radio, and official airline sponsor, Continental Airlines.

What types of exhibits and food vendors can participants and attendees expect?

We are expecting a lot of fun and informational exhibitors. We will start the walk off with yoga; there will be a mini massage tent. WPLJ radio will be playing music and giving out prizes. There will be a dog table giving away free Pawgua water and Little Badness treats to dogs participating. We have a NEDA t-shirt decorating station, a bake sale and lunch box table for snacks. Eating disorder treatment centers and body image specialists will be present handing out brochures and educating people about ED.

Will there be a social component before/after the fundraiser?

The walk itself is social, as well as an educational opportunity. It is a chance for people to bond, to talk, and to learn. The walk happened the week our annual conference that starts October 8. This brings in people from around the world to exchange information and learn from each other. This is not a one-time event, but an ongoing fight against eating disorders.

You seem to be doing a great job with balancing your work at WABC, your family, and by putting on the NEDA walk. What tips can you give to other women trying to manage it all at once?

Thanks! This issue has greatly impacted my family so I gratefully try to do anything I can to help others. When our family was struggling we got so much support from NEDA and from other families. Now that our family is doing so much better, it’s my turn to give back. I don’t wish an eating disorder on any family, but people should know there are others who have been through it and that we are here to help. As for finding the balance in life…I’ve learned life is never in perfect balance, you just do the best you can and keep a good sense of humor.

What has been one of the biggest challenges in planning the Walk so far?

There is so much to do with an event like this, it is difficult to say. We have an amazing team and everyone works together and believes in the cause. In this case, the fight against eating disorders.

What external resources have you used in your fundraising/outreach efforts (i.e. websites, mentors, social networks etc.)?

We have promoted the walk on blogs, newspapers and websites. We have enlisted special guests to help promote the event through their own networks. We are also running PSAs on channel 7, as well as WPLJ. We have also asked authors, documentarians and other news outlets to spread the word

What characteristics do you think make an event chair successful?

I think the most important aspect of chairing a successful event is your passion for a cause and a good sense of humor. Last year our audio system at the walk barely worked. We did a lot of shouting. This year we promise you will be able to hear us. And we promise we will have smiles on our faces, rain or shine.

We are very motivated and excited to be working on something at a grassroots level. At Channel 7 we say it’s all about the team, the same is true for out NEDA Walk committee. They have been amazing and I thank everyone for all the help and enthusiasm.

And as we well know, by that age, daily skin care is a major priority. This year, Kiehl’s partnered with the Rainforest Alliance to release a Limited Edition Art Label series of organic Acai Damage Protecting Toning Mists. All net proceeds from sales of the mists go to the Rainforest Alliance, and each bottle features a “socially conscious influencer.”

Julianne Moore, Jeff Koons, Malia Jones and Pharrell Williams each have a unique vision of social responsibility, depicted by images on the labels. Each mist contains Acai Berry Extract (full of anti-oxidants), aloe vera juice, and lavender in addition to essential oils. Eco-effective design was also taken into consideration, producing reusable and recyclable containers. Kiehl’s expects to raise $200,000 through this program. And why not? It’s a great idea to combat environmental skin damage while supporting sustainable forestry.

It means whatever you’re buying has been grown or made sustainably. Happy Earth Week!

Get ready to lock and load with hot hair trends from Keylee Sanders of Style Studio who consulted her favorite salon in San Francisco for the latest and greatest.

When it comes to style most people often think of clothes, shoes and bags, but one of the most important parts of getting ready for a black tie event begs the question “what am I going to do with my hair?” As with fashion, hair styles and trends change every season and can become true statements (we all remember the “Rachel” from Friends). To find out the hottest looks in hair and what will go perfect with your designer duds, I turned to my favorite hair guru David Tolls at Cowboys and Angels for advice and tips.

The overall trend for spring hair this year is “less aggressively structured and more natural, nothing that is trying to hard.” David was quick to tell me. Of course this doesn’t mean that you can throw it in an after the gym pony and call it a night. Even when it comes to the most “natural” looks a lot goes into it! David has also been working a lot with styles that are “more off the face yet are still anti volume. Gone are the days of huge hair that involve backcombing and tons of spray.” David laughs.

David identified three main trends that he has noticed and is using on his clients and for editorial photo shoots.

_- A bit off center (upper left). This includes looks like a high tight but that isn’t exactly centered on the head. It can include a side braid or ponytail. “This trend is not only stylish but also something most women can do at home” Tolls said.

-Embellishments. Call it the Lady GaGa craze but more and more you are seeing bows, headbands, clips and pins added into hair to give it an interesting element. “Lady GaGa has given women permission to be a bit more adventurous and over the top, this is especially true with the younger crowd but has trickled into evening looks as well.” David reminds us. As a style expert I have always loved the trick of a hat pin or brooch worked into the hair for a little added bling!

- Braids. “I love the fish tale braid right now, It is a bit of style and super easy. Can be polished or more rough.” David says. David recently styled a shoot where he constructed a low side braid and then wrapped it up around the head and secured with pins. “This style is also one that most women can do at home.” David points out.

When I asked David about rules of hair for spring he almost burst out laughing. “I don’t believe in rules when it comes to hair. I think people look most interesting when they go a different way and wear something they love that maybe not everyone would try” David says.

I have trusted David with my locks for years and he has a lot of magic, I know he is always suggesting what women can do at home but I think, don’t we have enough to do? I treasure my days at the hair salon when I can get a great wash (by wash I mean head massage) and I know my style will be flawless! No more looking in the mirror or asking my guy, “Does this look okay in the back, are their any bumps?”

From posture to primping, Emily Morse of Sex With Emily gives her top ten tips to feeling instantly sexier before, during, or after an event.

Just because you’ve got the outfit and finally found the right shoes doesn’t guarantee you’ll be emotionally ready or even camera ready for the big night.

Here are 10 things you can do to feel sexy before, during and after an event:

1. Relax: Take a bubble bath, pour a glass of champagne, and bring along your must have vibrator (like the Waterproof Mini Love Bullet), light scented candles to calm the senses and let go.

2. Visualization: While relishing in your post-bath haze, try some pre-event visualization. Think about how sexy you’re going to feel walking into the event. Feel it, know it, and expect it. Visualizing positive outcomes and thinking positive thoughts can actually affect your behavior during the big event.

3. Beauty Beat: You want to try some new products so best to practice at least the night before: test the shimmer lotion that’s supposed to make your décolletage supple, practice with the false eyelashes and experiment with that new electric blue eyeshadow.

4. Outfit: Last thing you want is to be rushing around the night of the event trying on the patterned tights, with the new heels and the funky purse. We’ve all had those last minute wardrobe malfunctions where you’re forced to settle for that “other” outfit that leaves you feeling anything but sexy.

5. Blow Out: Salons that specialize in blow-outs are popping up across the country. Why not treat yourself to a sexy new hairstyle. A good hair day is never underrated

6. Lingerie: Wearing sexy lingerie is a full proof way to feel sexy inside and out.

7. Be Positive: No one wants to hear about your bad hair day so to speak, so think of the good things in your life (and there are many) and shine and share around those details. People are attracted to positive people and positive = sexy.

8. Body Language: Sexiness is as much about posture and voice intonation as it is about cleavage or skirt length. Your body language is a way to exude sexiness. Crossed arms or ankles says ‘stay away”. Lean forward while talking and leave your arms by your side. Opening up your posture conveys that you’re inviting interaction

9. Touch Yourself: Touching your clothes – adjusting your necklace or smoothing your skirt – draws attention to the more feminine parts of your body without being crude.

10. Take a Stand: Staying on your feet makes you look confident, and confidence has been rated a top sexy trait. When you’re visually lower than everyone else it’s more challenging to engage as your best self assured sexy self.

Dear Diary,

For New Year’s, my Husband (the dear) gave me a week of personal training at the local health club for me.

Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started!

The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

________________________________

MONDAY:

Started my day at 6:00 a.m.

Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Christo waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god – with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!

Christo gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring!

Christo was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week-!!

________________________________

TUESDAY:

I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door.

Christo made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile.

His rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT-!! It’s a whole new life for me.

_______________________________

WEDNESDAY:

The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals.

Driving was OK as long as I didn’t try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Christo was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. His voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.

My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Christo put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators?

Christo told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other shit too.

_______________________________

THURSDAY:

Asshole was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn’t help being a half an hour late – it took me that long to tie my shoes.

He took me to work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. He sent some skinny bitch to find me. Then, as punishment, he put me on the rowing machine – which I sank.

FRIDAY:

I hate that bastard Christo more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little aerobic instructor.

If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it. Christo wanted me to work on my triceps. I don’t have any triceps!

And if you don’t want dents in the floor, don’t hand me the damn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn’t it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

________________________________

SATURDAY:

Satan left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing his voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

________________________________

SUNDAY:

I’m having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that for 2011 my husband (the little shit) will choose a gift for me that is fun — like a root canal or a hysterectomy.

I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!

———————————————————————————————-

Thank you to Vivanista member, Sue Herman, for passing the above diary entry to us!

Some advice on how to improve your inner beauty by living well to enhance your internal health.

The holidays are a great reminder for us to lavish love upon those whom we cherish. It is also a very good time to lavish love upon ourselves. Think about it, being loved and cherished not only intensifies our sense of inner well-being but also radiates outwardly and enhances our beauty.

As the old adage reminds us “beauty is only skin deep.” We can make ourselves very attractive with clothing and accessories, but true beauty comes from within. How many times have you seen someone who is not conventionally attractive but is perceived as beautiful because he or she radiates a sense of well-being and inner knowing of their self-worth and purpose in the world? They are completely at ease with themselves and the people around them.

It is vitally important that we take as good care of ourselves within as we do on the outside. It is much easier, though, to enhance our external beauty than to develop aspects of ourselves that make us comfortable within our own skin and accepting of our perceived physical flaws. Many of us have internal gremlins that are hell-bent on eroding our confidence and self esteem. We can counter those critics by learning to accept ourselves as we are — large hips and all! Of course it is important that we try to modify negative behavioral patterns and take action to improve our physical well-being in any way we can. But always be realistic. Some of us simply don’t have a Julia Roberts smile. But a smile is a smile is a smile, and it can lift your spirits of those around you.

There are many simple things you can do to improve your inner well-being. Myriads of books and articles have great advice on how to achieve this, but here are some of my quick and easy pointers:

• Breathe! Learn some simple breathing techniques that are calming and centering.

• Avoid negative thinking and people!

• Take time out to truly relax whether it is just being quiet listening to music or taking a stroll alone or with someone you love.

• Turn the lights low or light candles when you eat, take a long bath or shower.

• Choose a physical activity that resonates with your body whether it be yoga, pilates, tai chi, qi gong, hip-hop, pole, swing or ballroom dancing, roller blading or simply walking. Make time for whatever it is regularly. Once you develop the habit, you’ll find your body demands that you keep it!

• Meditate. If sitting still for any length of time is challenging, try an activity like tai chi that incorporates meditation with movement.

• Find ways to create harmony in your mind and in your life through a mind-body practice.

• Be grateful each day for whatever it is that is good in your life whether it be health, loving family and friends, a roof over your head, a comfy bed, a delicious meal, a beautiful sunny day.

• Be optimistic against all odds.

• Live in the moment.

Remember we all have the capacity to be beautiful, no matter our physical appearance.
